We love bees.
Bees are amazing little creatures. For years, no one knew how they flew. Bee flight defied every aerodynamic principle and engineers were at a loss to explain how those little tiny wings could lift those big fuzzy bodies.
But the bees didn’t care…they ignored convention, defied expectations, said “ha” to the engineers and just set out every day to do their important work making the world a more beautiful place.
Then, not too long ago, some scientist somewhere with too much time on his hands and some fancy thingamajig took high speed photos and analyzed the technical sequence of bee wings in flight. The mystery was finally solved.
But we still prefer to think the bees perform a little miracle every time they leave the ground.
defy gravity.™
Why 'The Queen Bee' was a natural for us:
· we're a female run company
· we’re small but mighty
· we defy gravity every day
· we protect our environment
· finding an exciting new food source has been known to send us into a happy dance
· we want to leave our little corner of the world a more beautiful place.
Okay, so now you know we care about bees. Why should you?
We’ve had some fun with bees on our Queen Bee website. But the truth is, bees are in big trouble.
Honeybees pollinate more than $14 billion worth of crops and seeds in the U.S. annually. Why that matters: every third bite of food we eat is dependent on a honeybee to pollinate it. But honeybees are disappearing at an alarming rate, and beekeepers are suddenly finding millions of their bees missing in action.
The bees mysteriously fly away in search of pollen and nectar and simply never return. Scientists are scrambling to figure out what’s behind this “colony collapse disorder.” Possible causes include viruses, pesticides, stress, poor nutrition, global warming, and even disorientation due to cell phone tower transmissions. There is a growing sense of urgency in science and agriculture as bees are vanishing in countries all over the world. If you’d like to learn more, Haagen Dazs has put together a beautiful little website helpthehoneybees.com.
We don’t want to see the amazing honeybees disappear-it’s personal for us here at The Queen Bee. But we believe this is an issue that should concern all of us who care about our environment and responsible stewardship of the earth. That’s why we donate a percentage of sales of all Queen Bee logo items to honeybee research at the University of California Davis.
On behalf of bees everywhere, thanks.
